The Story of a River
Connecticut, the state, is named for Connecticut, the river. To understand its history, head for the Connecticut River Museum, which just happens to be in one of the prettiest villages in New England.
Located at the mouth of the river beside an old steamboat dock in Essex, this small, bright museum tells the story of the early inhabitants, navigators, and explorers of this region. Collections include paintings, photographs, and artifacts such as early tools and equipment used in shipbuilding, yachting, and the other industries of the area. Schooner tours leave the steamboat dock and explore the river. Eagle watching is the big draw during the winter, but various other tour packages are available year-round. Inside, don’t miss the painted map of the river’s path that climbs the stairs along with you, or the replica of the Turtle, the world’s first submarine.
