4 reviews of Cloister of Alcobaça Monastery

Purity and Simplicity of the Monastery

Excellent

The Cloister of Silence Alcobaça Monastery (Alcobaça, Portugal) falls in love with the purity and simplicity of its lines. It was constructed between the years 1308 and 1311, during the reign of King Dinis. The galleries have arches and vaults, which communicate with the center for windows that form arches, supported by columns. The capitals are simply decorated, some are embellished with vegetables and dragons. In the gallery is the living Eastern Chapter, in the north gallery is the entrance to the refectory, the kitchen and monks. Opposite the refectory is the temple of the washing which is usual of all the Cistercian cloisters.

The upper gallery was added during the Manueline period, in the sixteenth century. I was admired around the Monastery of Alcobaça and excited. The Cloister of Silence is as the name suggests, a haven of peace.
