Church of Mercy
Next to the theater, in front of the Convent of Santa Clara, is Mercy Church that dates from the early sixteenth century. It has a very peculiar facade of two bodies together (which correspond to individual chapels inside) that's entirely covered with typical Portuguese tiles in white and blue from the late nineteenth century. Inside is a priceless seventeenth century Mannerist altarpiece composed of several polychrome sculptures and the Virgin of Mercy. An annex to the main body is the Chapel of Our Lord of the Steps, which houses the homonymous carving of the XVIII century.
