A Devoted Saint

Excellent

It’s curious to see the devotion people have towards the Jesús de Medinaceli in Madrid, and to see the long lines on Fridays in order to enter the church and touch the saint.

Today is a normal day, without too many people, so I was able to go in the church and appreciate one of the sculptural jewels from the carver schools of Seville: the Medinaceli Christ, from the 17th Century. It has baroque details that make it surprisingly real; the image definitely stands out.

The church is simple and pretty; the entrance has a nice “guard” that facilitates all types of information to the curious traveler that goes visit the place. He told me to go up to see the carved figure of the Medinaceli and that I was allowed to take pictures, but without flash. Behind a wall, a hidden staircase gives access to the place where the Christ stands still and in deep pain. This figure is really impressive when seen close, sometimes you think it is real.

While I observe the figure and the image of the Basilica from upstairs, a great number of parishioners go up to pray and touch and kiss the image with infinite and secret petitions. For me the visit is enough and I live the people to their prayers and confessions. It was a curious visit, very recommendable, a bit hypnotic with this “real” Jesus. It is a nice church that crossed my path along the interesting Las Letras neighborhood.

When I went out, the guard asked me if I liked it. “It’s beautiful, right?” he asks. I couldn’t help but nod and feel the excitement together with these believers. It is one of the curiosities of the big cities, where tradition, religion, culture and modernity mix in an interesting cocktail.

The guard also told me that it is quite impressive to see the paso of this Christ during Holy Week. It could be interesting to see.
