An incredible church clock
This Gothic-looking octagonal church and lantern tower was designed by John Shaw in the eighteenth century. It was started on a different site, but was demolished to allow expansion of Flee Street. On Shaw's death, it was completed by his son, at a site where an older church (from the eleventh century) once stood. The church has an incredible seventeenth century clock that still works, with the figures of two giants in loincloths hitting the bells with bats to strike the hours and quarters. In the courtyard, you can see the bronze bust of Lord Alfred Harmsworth Northcliffe, the founder of the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror.
