Celebrating the Chinese community in Panama

Excellent

This monument, located next to the Mirador of the Americas was unveiled in 2007 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Chinese presence in Panama, and to celebrate the important role that they played in the country's national development. The first Chinese arrived in Panama in 1852, coming as contracted workers to help build America's first transcontinental railway. Every years on the 30th of March, Panama celebrates the Civic Day to Commemorate the Chinese Ethnicity. The monument consists of an Eastern-style arc flanked by two sculptures and a pagoda. There is an obelisk with a plaque, written in Spanish and Chinese.

I was very interested to find this curious twinning of cultures in this spot, in front of the entrance to the Canal.
