The medieval town of Cherven is situated in northern Bulgaria, when you are come from Rousse, on the border between Romania and Bulgaria. It is about 30 miles south, past the village of Ivanovo. Cherven was an important military base, it was located near to the River Danube, a natural defense for Bulgarians seeking to protect the town from invasion. Cherven was built beside the river Cherni Lom, which is where it got its name from. The village is a typical Bulgarian rural town with these lovely wooden houses covered with thatched roofs which open up where you have the space to store wheat during the winter months.
