Cheong Fatt Tze
One hundred and ten years ago, Cheong Fatt Tze was one of the most important buildings of multi millionaires in the city of Penang, northern Malaysia. This was where many Indonesian, Thai or Chinese magnates of the region had built magnificent palaces to show off their prestige. At that time, Chong was the Rockefeller of the East. He was the Consul General of China and as you may expect of such a position, Mandarine gentleman of the first order. He was also the director of the Chinese rail network, and held this same position at the country's first modern bank. He died in 1916 at the age of 76.
Fatt Tze had built his house for himself and his seven wives. It is huge with 38 rooms, five courtyards, seven staircases and 220 windows. The finest craftsmen were brought from China to Malaysia in the 1880s to build this masterpiece. Eventually, when his son died in 1989, the house was half abandoned. In 1995, another businessman came and began restoring it using Feng Shui and it is now a very exclusive hotel. It is located in the neighborhood of Georgetown, Penang, and reverberates with the golden age of the city. It's where they recorded the movie Indochine with Catherine Deneuve.
