Charleroi

In 1666 the Spanish Netherlands, under the the expansionist ambitions of Louis XVI, decided to build a fortress in the village of Charnoy. He adopted the name of Charleroi in honor of the Spanish King, Charles II. The following year, France seized the city and gave it its present design with an upper and lower hexagonal plane and concentric layout of the streets. This city is also the birthplace of a Belgian comic book so it is possible to find Spirou, Marsupilami, or Lucky Luke strolling downtown or on the subway.
