Chapel of the Souls

This small chapel is named because it was outside the city walls, near the cemetery (moved here in the XIX century), and it's unique in that it was the first church in the city (built in the XIII century) so it's also known as "Matrix Velha" (old). However, the current structure dates from the XVIII century, it was rebuilt by order of the canon Domingos Soares de Campos. Outside one sarcosolio from the XIV century is preserved. Excavations are ongoing to improve the environment and rebuild the walls and roof. Archaeologists have found bases of other medieval buildings, tombs, coins and remains
