The Historic Centre of Porto Seguro is high above the city, atop a cliff in a prime position overlooking the sea and the palm trees, and was consecrated a National Monument in 1973. Its architectural ensemble includes Marco Discovery (1506) brought from Portugal by Gonçalo Coelho in 1503, the Church of Our Lady of Sorrow (1535), the Church of Our Lady of Mercy (1526), the Church of St. Benedict (about 1550) and the Town Hall (1756), where the City Museum and the local core IPHAN (Institute of National Heritage), and the multicolored houses with the shops of handicrafts and souvenirs (which by the way are well regard) function.
