unforgettable, don't miss it!
Visiting a cenote is one of the experiences that you should not miss if you plan to travel to the Riviera Maya. No matter which one you choose: an open cenote, an underground cenote, or a cave, any one will surprise you and leave a lasting memory on your retina. The cenote Suytum (although it would be more appropriate to speak of all Suytum cenotes) is located in the Cattle Ranch - Ecological Suytun Fernandez and Mendoza, at approximately kilometer 8 of the Valladolid road connecting Puerto Juarez. Under a relentless and sweltering sun, which is a general trend in these latitudes during August, we headed for the stairs leading into the denote.
The stairs promise excitement, adventure, beauty, and above all, relief, since, as we move into the heart of the vast cavern that houses the cenote, the temperature becomes cooler and the overheated feeling gradually disappears. As our eyes grew accustomed to the darkness, the structure of the cenote slowly took shape in all its magnitude. We were more than 20 meters deep in the bowels of a huge cave full of great stalactites, the temperature was ideal, and allowed our senses to focus on enjoying the beauty that unfolded before them. The silence, the magnitude of the cavern, and the gentle turquoise waters seemed to be lit by a magical light from an opening in the top of the cave, creating a dream atmosphere. A primitive halo surrounded us, caught us. In this scenario, it is not difficult to imagine the ancient inhabitants of these lands taking offerings to place before their ancient gods. Here, they worshipped gods from Chac, the rain god, to Yum Kaax, the maize god, and Xchel, the goddess of beauty and fertility. The cool waters, crystal clear, invite visitors to enjoy a relaxing bath in the cenote while watching freshwater fish swim around you unapologetically. We left the sacred area - Suytum was once a ceremonial cenote - emotionally charged, relaxed, and ready to regain our strength in the restaurant located on the site of a cattle ranch which also organizes horseback riding or cycling. After lunch, local youths, brightened up our desktop for about 20 minutes with a musical performance and dance of Mayan origin. An experience you shouldn't miss.
