Cattedrale di Santa Aurea, Ostia antica, Roma

Quando si arriva ad Ostia Antica, magari per andare a visitare le splendide rovine romane della vecchia città abbandonata per l'insabbiamento del porto, c'è un posto particolare, che proietta in una dimensione fatta di silenzio e tranquillità. E' il Borgo di Ostia Antica, in cui si può ammirare una cattedrale della fine del 1400, che però sorge su resti molto più lontani nel tempo, forse del IX secolo. La chiesa, che colpisce perché nella sua struttura ingloba elementi di età romana e del primo Medioevo, è dedicata a una santa semi-sconosciuta, nel senso che non si hanno su di lei notizie certe: è Santa Aurea che viveva in zona e che venne imprigionata dall'imperatore Claudio, martirizzata, incatenata, annegata in mare (per questo è diventata patrona dei marinai). Quando il suo corpo tornò a riva, fu sepolta qui, nello stesso luogo in cui fu tumulata una santa più famosa, Monica, la mamma di Sant'Agostino. L'edificio è a un'unica navata, con un grosso rosone anteriore e un pregevole soffitto di legno a capriate decorate con gigli.
