1 review of Cathedral of St. Blasien

Grand Cathedral in the Middle of the Black Forest

Excellent

In the southern Black Forest, in the town of St. Blasien with its 4100 inhabitants, there is something that particularly caught my attention, the St. Blasien cathedral with one of the largest domes in Europe. Located at the foot of Mount Feldberg, this is a majestic baroque church that occupies the site of a medieval monastery founded in 858 by hermit monks. The current cathedral was built between 1771 and 1783, was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, and is considered a masterpiece of early classicism. You can already see the spectacular dome even before reaching St. Blasien. The interior is also really great.

It comprises twenty pillars that support the huge dome adorned with a fresco, the third largest in Europe. Large windows collect sunlight and cast it in every corner of the church forming a clear, open space, similar to heaven in the Baroque paintings.
