10 reviews of Cathedral of Messina

Spectacle of sight and sound

Messina is in the northeast of Sicily. As soon as you cross over to Sicily from Reggio Calabria, on a ferry if you come by land, you can see the city from the Calabrian coast. One of its main attractions is the Cathedral. It survived the earthquake which devastated this city for many years and gave it its characteristics. It has a tower with a very strange clock with the signs of the Zodiac and when the clock strikes noon it becomes a spectacle of sight and sound. An orchestra begins to play and activates a mechanism that opens from the top to bottom: several figures appear such as a Lion, Rooster, and figures of saints and angels which then march in a circle and finish with ducking back inside.

Do not miss it! It's worth seeing and hearing.
