Granada Cathedral

The Cathedral of Granada, although it is not as spectacular as other cathedrals in Spain like the one in Burgos, Toledo or León, is an essential monument if you to get to know this beautiful city.

Built a little later than those Gothic cathedrals in Castile, the one in Granada is the best example of Renaissance religious architecture we have in Spain. With the domes, its gilds Baroque´s and the everlasting restoration works (it is always covered with scaffoldings) it is an authentic myth to be able to see all the frames restored, all the altarpieces uncovered, all the doors open...

It seems as if I speak with bitterness; it is actually not the case.

Renaissance church. Diego de Siloé found the perfect solution to combine a renaissance chapel to a Gothic appearance. He united the circular floor to the basilica one, which earned him the recognition of the architects at the time. The main chapel sums up the greatness of this building. The dome of the main chapel is decorated with windows of a great beauty, with Alonso Cano's sculptures and paintings. It has three beautiful doors: Ecce Homo, San Jerónimo and the Perdón one, the latter with excellent reliefs of Faith and Justice. The main facade is Baroque. The masonry of the chorus is plateresque.

This cathedral, combining Gothic and Renaissance styles, is one of the main works of Spanish renaissance. During the Holy Week it has a special relevance, since most of the Brotherhoods go through it. It was built between 1529 and 1537.

Architecturally speaking it is a world to discover, but the best part of all is the historical significance it has within for the Reconquista of Spain, being that Granada was the last Muslim stronghold.
