10 reviews of Castle of Ampudia

Medieval fortress that hosts a varied collection.

The truth surprised me the elegance and balanced design, the well preserved, that is. Its enclave stands out at the top of the hill, its trapezoidal plant with its corners, topped by fortresses, square towers. There is one of them that is the largest, dedicated as a keep. Going up its stairs has its charm, while enjoying, its ornamental details and the shield of the Duke of Lerma. There have been several owners, including the Count of Salvatierra, D Pedro de Ayala. Also the Count of the Farm, D. Juan de Alburquerque and the Ducal House of Alba in order, in turn prominent guests enjoyed the castle as King Ferdinand the Catholic and Charles V.

It would be with the Duke of Lerma, favorite of King Philip III who attended on several occasions, so that the castle became the seat of the court, in its heyday. Then they left it, going into decline, until it was acquired in 1960, D. Eugenio Fontaneda Pérez, who began his arduous restoration. Enjoying in a very scarce visit, the truth. From varied collections such as, Archeology with (Pieces of different chronologies, Bronze Age with axes, points, daggers and swords, along with several funerary steles, Iron age, Roman period), Sacred art (with polychrome sculptures, sacred paintings, goldsmithing, a magnificent walnut-wood calvary, liturgical objects), toys (a magical world, old dolls with a porcelain face, pieces of tin in cars, puppets and houses with their furniture), pieces that are close together, to enjoy the mix of objects. Hall of Arms and the Pharmacy a special room, like those apothecaries with ceramic jars, reproducing medieval atmosphere, with its chimney and still, even an operations chair. Of all the best and perhaps most appreciated, is its exterior, but it is an appointment that is inevitable, inviting you its majesty raised on the ruins of an ancient fortress, the fifteenth century. In the Castle of Ampudia, there were nobles and treaties that date to this day, such as that Valladolid ceased to be the capital, by transfer to Madrid.

Castle Ampudia

The most important monument is the Castle of Ampudia (no offense to your Collegiate), not only for its imposing structure, but also for its strategic location makes us enjoy stunning views of the land of fields and village. The remains of an ancient tower lead us to the entrance and around the wineries with its distinctive chimneys and two sturdy cannons guarding the village. The castle was signed changing capital of Valladolid to Madrid. Today, despite being privately owned, is open to visitors but I agree with other travelers that it would be desirable to get inside and see the exhibition of

Ancient artifacts that apparently houses.

Life in the castle

Excellent

On February 8, 2008 I came to die to this castle. Dead resurrected first in Madrid and soon after the gates of the castle, but had died earlier in the Lavapies neighborhood of Madrid. He spent one stage and came another much better. Built in the eleventh century, has a long history of events, donations, expropriations and transfers, (you can check out the full story at'https://www.castillosnet.org') after the French invasion the castle was abandoned and in 1960 it acquired Fontaneda Eugenio,

Who its rooms restored and converted into an interesting museum where you can see one of the most important private collections of ancient art from Spain, with furniture and period decor.

Palencia Romanesque.

The back of the castle is in pretty bad situation. One of the towers seems destined to its collapse if not remedied soon. From the front entrance you can see a beautiful view of the town and its surroundings, as well as the chimneys of houses carved into the mountainside.

It seems impossible to have a castle...

It seems impossible to have a castle like today Ampudia. It is the typical building we imagine when we think of princess stories, perhaps that is the most important in the province of Palencia and, of course, which is better preserved. It was built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries and was declared a National Monument in 1931. It is a Gothic castle with trapezoidal floor and has three square towers at the corners, as the fourth collapsed while. The bigger the tower keep. The facade of the castle of Ampudia is awesome, is distributed symmetrically and has several decorations, including a shield of the Duke of Lerma.

In this castle was where the document was signed by which pierced the capital of Valladolid to Madrid. For a long time it was abandoned, until in 1960 it was purchased Fontaneda Eugenio Perez and set about restoring it. Once restored, the owner has created inside a museum of antiquities with elements of sacred art, archeology, folk arts, weapons and even toys. The area around the castle also help beautify the place, as they are all landscaped areas with fireplaces underground cellars. Ampudia Castle is truly wonderful, the only problem there is that has a very limited visiting hours, is only open on Saturdays, unless you call ahead and make an appointment.
