Hanging Houses of Cuenca

Going to Cuenca and not going to see the Casas Colgadas is like going to Paris and missing the Eiffel Tower. It is, without a doubt, its most representative monument. I am one of those people who believe that it is one of those monuments that you see better from a distance, since it allows you to appreciate how the houses have remained through time, as well as that they are standing on the edge of a ravine, like the one in Huecar River.

In order to see them, I recommend moving through the ravine, along its roads and viewpoints, as to appreciate the verticality of these buildings. You shouldn't let the heights impress you when you cross the bridge across the gorges, which moves with the flow of the tourists, and should take the opportunity to take a few pictures of the Casas Colgadas from there.

The Casas Colgadas constitute one of the most famous postcards of Cuenca, they are an undeniable symbol. From the gorges of the Huecar River, one has the most spectacular views of these houses and it is where most of the visitors of the city go to take pictures with the houses in the background; you can't miss the opportunity. They are literally flying, hanging buildings, above the river's ravine.

The current Casas Colgadas are the result of a remodeling process that started in the Middle Ages on the original medieval houses. They used to be part of a range of houses hanging above the Huecar ravine. The curious current state of these houses is the result of the reforms undertaken in 1928 by the municipal architect Fernando Alcántara and of the later reconstructions, in 1950 and 1978.

Going to Cuenca is simply synonymous with seeing the Hanging Houses (Casas Colgadas), that aren’t really hanging from anything. Their location, just on the border of the hunky, rocky piece of land where the old quarters sits has these houses sitting right above (and sometimes over) the cliff.

Being a UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s a symbol of the city. They’re very well conserved, and a headquarters of the contemporary museum of Cuenca, which can be seen inside the buildings.
Just seeing them is amazing, as they’re “stuck” to the side of the cliff. But seeing them in person can be deceiving due to their surprisingly small size, and because most people expect the houses to be dangling over the side of the cliff.
