MELITHA BLASCO
A world-famous tourist event
The Rio de Janeiro Carnival is a world-famous tourist event which brings crowds of Brazilians and foreigners together. the central parade takes place in the Sambodromo, located on Av. Marques de Sapucai, in the neighbourhood Cidade Nova in the north of the city. The samba schools that participate are divided into six categories, and in each category there are six schools. There are four days of parades. Even if you're not a member of an official school, you can dress up and participate in the parades, but this can be exhausting, as most people who do so have trained for a long time. Some tourist companies can help you to register for it, but just watching the spectacle will leave you speechless.
The colour, the splendour, the music, the sheer happiness ... you can try to get tickets for a private box, although they are very expensive, but you can go to the Sambodromo for free. Some schools will let you watch them training for the carnival, too, which is almost as spectacular as the parade itself.
