Spectacular Views From La Manga

This beautiful lighthouse is found in one of the most touristic places in Cartagena, La Manga.
Its location is very special because it is located on the highest point of Cabo de Palos, a rock (like you can see from the pictures).

As a historical anecdote: in ancient times they said that the rock where the lighthouse stands today used to have a temple dedicated to Baal Hammon, known as Saturn in Roman times.

As you can see it is the perfect place to enjoy views of La Manga, of the Mediterranean Sea and some beautiful beaches.

The Best Place in the World

It is located south of La Manga del Mar Menor in the municipality of Cartagena. In my opinion, it is the best place in the world, especially if you like solitude and enjoying the sea (here you can find the marine reserve of the Hormiga Islands). It is a place that is visited by divers, since it is one of the best places for diving in Europe, due to its marine flora and fauna. You can also see the remains of sunken ships (El Sirio, Standfield, El Naranjito, etc.).

Cabo de Palos preserves its marine atmosphere since it is a small fishing town. In the port area you can taste the famous “caldero” (rice with fish broth) that you can only find here.

Calmness

Next to the tall buildings and hotels on the Mar Menor, the town of El Cabo is like a living memory of what used to be La Manga.

In its narrow streets you breathe a calm and peace of another time, a time of fishing, which used to be the main activity of the port. Today the tradition has been lost, even though the simple restaurants still serve fish and seafood –by itself or in broth. You eat well in almost all of the restaurants, I prefer La Tana, with great grilled seafood and rice.

After eating I recommend you walk to the lighthouse. They say that it was built over a medieval tower where they warned the small town of fishermen of possible pirate attacks.
