One Lake, Five Towns
Candlewood Lake isn’t just any inland body of water. The largest man-made lake in Connecticut, it covers 5,420 acres. Its 65 miles of shoreline take you on a gorgeous journey through five municipalities including the tiny and adorable town of Sherman, the classically beautiful town of New Milford, and the eclectic city of Danbury. Drive around the lake to take in views of the deep blue water through the trees (stunning in summer as well as a favorite of leaf-peepers in the fall), and marvel at the labor it took to create this eleven mile long oasis.
On the lake itself, there are opportunities for boating, fishing, and water sports. You can also dive below the surface to see the remains of the villages and farms sacrificed for hydroelectric power in the 1920s. Squantz Pond State Park and the Pootatuck State Forest, connected to the lake by a causeway, offer a public beach and hiking trails.
