3 reviews of Cañas

Cañas, a place full of things to do: zoo, nature center, canoe trips, jungle tours, etc.

Cañas is in the plains of Guanacaste and on the Pan American Highway, a few miles west of Tilaran. This zone is known as "sheets" and it is referred to as the "cowboy country" because of the number of cattle farms. Cañas is known for its traditional dance and cattle ranches, it is a tiny town with a unique charm. It is 4 hours from the capital San Jose, Cañas is unknown and few tourists come to visit. However, the town has services and facilities that include some nice restaurants, banks, bars, Internet cafes, supermarkets, hotels and a hospital. There is no real tourist attraction but what is worth seeing is the church.

With an unusual design, this church was constructed with a bright mural outside with colorful mosaics. Close to the village you can see national parks and reserves, Canas is also surrounded by Lake Arenal and Arenal Volcano. Some other attractions that are worthwhile and which are within walking distance are the Corobici River, which is 15 minutes north of town and is a good place to have a canoe trip on the river. South of town and 30 minutes by car one can find Tempisque which has one of the clearest waters of Costa Rica, perfect for rafting or touring the jungle near the village. There you will also find the National Park Palo Verde. A 1 hour drive away are the lovely beaches of Playas del Coco and Playa Tamarindo. La Pacifica is a good place to see, a nature center with a hotel to accommodate guests. This model uses farm friendly methods on the environment for agriculture and livestock. There is also the zoo of cats called The Pumas, a reservation for lost or injured wild cats like jaguarundis, ocelots, marguays, jaguars and pumas.
