Paved with marble
Port Street is still paved with marble and was the greatest avenue in Ephesus. It was built by Byzantine Emperor Arcadius (fifth century) and in its heyday waterways and sewers ran beneath these marble slabs. Fifty lamps illuminated the columns and both sides of the avenue had shops, spas and triumphal columns. It, along with the Grand Theatre, was the most splendid of all Ephesus. The avenue's magnitude shows what it was like in this great city (which became the capital of all of Asia Minor). Stepping on the white tiles you feel very, very small, and swallowed by history.
