One of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen
Cala Coticcio is a beautiful beach on the Island of Caprera in the La Maddalena archipelago just north of Sardinia. Beaches are my passion, which is what brought me to this island, which is a must for beach-lovers. Cala Coticcio isn’t easy to get to, but there are two ways of getting there: leaving the car in a distant parking lot and making the hike, or by sea. Since I didn’t have a boat handy, I decided to take the land route. I strapped on my shoes, used my cell phone as a guide, and got on the trail. The trail disappeared a few times and is definitely not well-marked. In fact, many people who venture to this beach take a wrong turn in the bushes and end up back at the parking lot.
I was a bit nervous, but pushed on out of pure desire to hit that beautiful beach! After about half an hour of semi-amusing hiking, I arrived so tired that all I wanted to do was sit down and drink water. Then, I looked at my surroundings. It’s a small cove, almost hidden, and surrounded by pink granite rocks. The tide was low and the impression was good, but not great. In short, I had my doubts. Everyone talked about an even better beach “just off to one side” but I didn’t see any trace of it. So, I hopped up on the rocks to my left and didn’t see any trail, but I did spot a couple of people walking that direction. I followed them and what I saw was spectacular! A small beach of fine white sand, turquoise waters, and smooth rocks which formed a wall, sheltering the cove from the ocean currents and wind. It basically created a natural swimming pool. All my efforts were worth it! The beauty of the place really made my hair stand up. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. You can, after all, reach Cala Coticcio but please respect the environment and don’t leave any trash behind. For those of you arriving by boat, please remember to shut off your motor when you’re about 50ft. out. It’s an amazing place to visit!!! Maybe not the best place to bring small children.
