Byland Abbey
In the North of England in medieval times, there were several abbeys but these three were the most important: Rievaulx Abbey, Fountain Abbey and Byland Abbey. The ruins of this abbey are located in the natural park of North Yorkshire, in what is known as the "Moors". The landscapes are simply breathtaking. It was founded by the order of Sauvigny (of French origin), but was later transformed by the Cistercian order in 1147. At the main entrance, there is a huge rose window, apparently one of the most ambitious architectural projects of the time. Note also the remains of the chimney of the abbot's house and museum filled with pieces recovered in excavations and restorations.
