1 review of Bust of Dr.Alfredo Magalhaes

Marine biologist

First of all, I'll tell you a little bit about Dr. Alfredo de Magalhaes, a marine biologist born in Lamego (Portugal) in the 19th century. He attended college in Lisbon, where he lived with his family. In 1911, he entered the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, and graduated brilliantly in 1917. Medicine was not what he wanted to do, but rather was something imposed by his family. He planned to study engineering when his medical career ended. In 1920, he finished his Doctorate of Medicine, but his disinterest was compounded over time in civilian and military hospitals during the flu epidemic in 1918.

On the other hand, while he spent time with Professor Augusto Celestino da Costa, he began to take increasing interest in Biology. His intense scientific work in the field of oceanography, in particular in Marine Biology, is the reason that this educated man is honoured. In 1959, he died at his home in Lisbon from a heart attack. This bust is located in the landscaped gardens within the fortress of Valença do Minho and beside a beautiful chapel.
