2 reviews of Bonifacio Citadel

Citadel provides countless things to see

The Citadel of Bonifacio is the most gorgeous place in the village and one of the most significant monuments on the island. It Genoese origin and is above 2 cliffs, between the bay and the ocean. To enter you must to go to the port and pick up a super-steep cache which is called Montee St Roch. From here we reached the door of Genoa, the access to the citadel and the only entry point until in the year 1854 where they constructed the door of France. Once inside there are many places to see. To the north we can see the bastion de l'Ltendard. Here are the remnants of the forts constructed in the year 1553.

Here you can visit the Memorial du Passe Bonifacien, which is a recreation of the most important events that have happened throughout history here. To the south is the Place du marché and the Manichella Palce, 2 lovely squares where there are amazing views of the cliffs and the island of Sardinia. Inside the citadel you can see the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. This is a structure that is very similar to those of Italian architecture and was constructed in the 15th century. It was also the meeting place of the notables of the city. Another church inside the citadel is the Holy Dominguez. It is one of the few Gothic churches that exist in Corsica and to visit you have to pay 2.50 euros. The highlight is an altarpiece from the 18th century. Among all the monuments that can be visited in Bonifacio which I liked was the ladder of the King of Aragon. It was named this because it was founded by the Aragonese, which were the reign in this place for a while. It is 187 steps down and 60 meters from the top of the citadel to the ocean. They are in exceptional condition and it is great for when you go into them like you're in a maze from which you can not leave. To see all the sights of Bonifacio it is best to purchase a joint ticket at the tourist office which costs 6 euros.
