Bom Xesus Monastery

Se trata de un monasterio en semirruina, aunque conserva íntegramente la iglesia, con una hermosa fachada y una torre-campanario cuadrada. En su fachada presenta una diminuta hornacina con la imagen del Salvador, franqueada por una hermosa portada gótico-plateresca, en la que se hace evidente la influencia portuguesa en una combinación del plateresco y el gótico tardío. Del resto del monasterio que está totalmente abandonado, sobresale el claustro, que se conserva casi íntegro, con forma rectangular, y veintiocho arcos y capiteles. Se pueden ver los campos y huertas que antiguamente trabajaban los monjes y el pozo y fuente que construyeron para tal fin. Una pena que lo tengan en esas condiciones sin tan siquiera un cartel explicativo.

It is a monastery in semirruina, but retains all the church, with a beautiful facade and square bell tower. The façade has a tiny niche with the image of the Savior, flanked by a beautiful Gothic-plateresca, in which the Portuguese influence is evident in a combination of late Gothic and plateresco. The rest of it is totally abandoned monastery, the cloister stands, preserved almost intact, with a rectangular shape, and twenty-eight arches and capitals. You can see the fields and orchards that once worked the monks and the well and fountain built for that purpose. A shame to have that in these conditions without even an explanatory panel.

Desde Xinzo de Limia puedes coger una pequeña carretera en dirección a Villar de Barrio que pasa por la aldea de A Pena, al pie de su torre medieval y seguir en dirección a Trandeiras. Un pequeño desvío monte arriba te lleva al Santuario de Bom Xesus cuya portada tiene cierto aire manuelino. Pero la sorpresa es que junto al santuario están las solitarias y grandiosas ruinas de un enorme monasterio. Quedan restos del claustro, de las dependencias monacales con una espléndida fachada y, rodeando el edificio, las abandonadas huertas donde aún se aprecian los canales de agua para regar que parten de un pozo medio oculto entre la maleza. From Xinzo de Limia you can take a small road towards Vilar de Barrio passing through the village of A Pena, at the foot of the medieval tower and follow direction Trandeiras. A small detour takes you up the mountain to the Sanctuary of Bom Xesus whose cover has some Manueline air. But the surprise is that by the sanctuary are solitary and grandiose ruins of a huge monastery.
