A classic on Sudder Street
Blue Sky Restaurant is a landmark among travelers and volunteers who spend several weeks/months in Kolkata. It is one of those places that you've heard about or read references to again and again. The Blue Sky is on Sudder Street, a backpacker street par excellence, which contains many cheap inns and restaurants that are primarily aimed at this audience. You can eat almost everything from classic tandoori chicken to Western dishes like salads, chicken burgers and sandwiches. Or even granola with yogurt and fruit for breakfast which is more difficult to find in other traditional restaurants. In fact, I would say that these dishes are the most successful among people who spend extended periods of time here, and may get tired of Indian food.
In my case (and I consider myself a true fan of Indian food), the Blue Sky was a "lifeline" when intestinal inflammation grabbed me and I couldn't eat anything cooked with oil and spices. Blue Sky prepare a delicious grilled chicken (Chicken Princess, I think they called it) with vegetables and mashed potatoes that was my staple for several days until I was completely recovered. Blue Sky prices are slightly higher than those of the popular restaurants where the thali is less than a euro. But when can a tandoori chicken costing 2-3 euros be considered "expensive"? For a traveler with economy in mind (like me) it was, but in sometimes you have to loosen your belt - especially when health is at stake. However, what makes Blue Sky a special restaurant is not the food but the people pulling together. At one o'clock, after a hard morning's work, the place is full of tired volunteers, hungry and willing to share experiences of this special city - Kolkata. At dinner it is more of the same because Blue Sky, more than any other restaurant, is a real social center that people passing through Kolkata can not stop visiting, at least once.
