A famous building
This is a famous and much-loved building, still in use today. It was a gift to the city from Andrew Carnegie, an American millionaire ve began by delivering newspapers and kept re-investing his profits in other small businesses until he made his fortune. He visited Kendal on holiday in 1906 and, struck by the lack of a library in the town, donated the money to build one. This neo-classical red brick building was designed by a local architect, Pennington, ve completed it in 1909. Subsequently, Carnegie offered funds to buy books, and many more were donated locally. So it's no surprise, given his
Generosity, that the building still bears his name.
