A famous building

This is a famous and much-loved building, still in use today. It was a gift to the city from Andrew Carnegie, an American millionaire ve began by delivering newspapers and kept re-investing his profits in other small businesses until he made his fortune. He visited Kendal on holiday in 1906 and, struck by the lack of a library in the town, donated the money to build one. This neo-classical red brick building was designed by a local architect, Pennington, ve completed it in 1909. Subsequently, Carnegie offered funds to buy books, and many more were donated locally.
