Interesting Old Historical Area
Benasal is a municipality of Castellón, that belongs to the region of Alto Maestrazgo and has about 1500 inhabitants.
The church Asunción de la Virgen of the 18th century is quite interesting. It preserves a good baroque facade, as well as an important gold and silver articles, religious ornament and medieval, such as the "Lecho de la Virgen", the altarpiece and a Last Supper that the sculptor, José Gozalbo, made in iron.
You have to walk the "La Mola" complex, primitive nucleus of the population where we can still see a wall and the towers of Garcès, Redona, de la Presó, and an entry to the building with a traditional Arab arch.
La Mola gives way to the old historic area named "Els Carrerons", formed by narrow streets with some of the oldest houses of the town. You can see there well preserved noble mansions of the 18th century, like the Sánchez de Cotanda (which preserves two baroque doors of the 18th century), Matutano y Grau; el Forn de Dal, and the so called La Mola building, with an arch of the primitive walls.
Today, in La Mola you can find the archeology museum "Alt Maestrat" and the Carles Salvador i Gimeno. This town is famous in Valencia, especially for its Balneario de la Fuente En-Segures, which preserves pieces of modernist architecture of the beginning of the 20th Century.
