Curiosity deserves a kiss!
What I love about a wall are the exterior exits - monumental doors, fisheye windows and stilted arches that seem to hold you as you pass between pillars. I could continue describing all kinds of passages in Art History terms but I mostly like this place for the surprise effect it had on me. It was a spring day in Saint Malo and though it was very sunny, the sea moisture was cold and the wind flapped gulls, so I had to go and get warm. Up and down those intra mural streets curiosity piqued me and pushed me into a hole in the wall. I looked and there was the sea. Curiosity deserves a kiss! Actually, I was told, it was not my discovery as everyone knew what was on the other side.
I was disappointed but spellbound by what I saw - the Bé Islands - surviving the fierce water which is never to be trusted. They are 500m from Bon Secours beach (510m from my window) and therein lies the father of French romantic literature, the diplomat Chateaubriand.
