Bayeux British Military Cemetery

Excellent

We step on American soil, and there is nobody like them to honor their dead. The silence and recollection is as thunderous as the thousands of headstones neatly aligned and maintained. The landscape is very well cared for, and you can learn about the evolution of the Normandy Landings from the permanent exhibition there. A must visit.

This military cemetery is in Lower Normandy in France, about 30 kilometers from Caen and a few kilometers from the city of Caen. The cemetery is in the town of Bayeux, near the Museum "Memorial de la Bataille de Normandie". There are 4648 buried bodies of soldiers and fighters of the Second World War. The nationalities are present with nearly 4000 British and Canadian soldiers. In front of the cemetery there is a memorial to the 2092 Commonwealth soldiers killed during the Battle of Normandy landings but never had a funeral. The cemetery has nothing to do with a cemetery "normal", in which it shows the passage of time and often not careful enough. The Bayeux was planned as an English garden, with a perfectly level surface and completely covered with a perfectly cut lawn. The tall trees contrast with the thousands of white tombstones in a perfect horizontal cover cemetery space. It is a site that produces shame, sadness and anger, and you wonder when you see the names on the tombstones of soldiers and right next door, written ages 19, 18, 10 years ...

Here, the Bayeux War Cemetery was planned as an English garden, with a perfectly horizontal and completely covered with a lawn cut millimeter size. The tall trees contrast with thousands of small white tombstones perfectly aligned, most do not wear names because we do not know the identity of the soldier at the time of burial. This is a site that makes you sad, but at the same time paying tribute to the heroes who died to liberate Europe from Nazi domination. Most did not 20 years.
