Batu Caves

Though I wasn't that impressed with Kuala Lumpur, this extraordinary place made the trip worth it. The Batu Caves offers the best of both worlds: a scenic a majestic setting and interesting, moving religious services. It's set in a majestic natural cave in the middle of a limestone mountain and is one of the most important Hindu temples in Malaysia. You can reach it by a 272-step staircase carved into the rock. During the ascent, you can see unique Hindu rites with offerings, blessings, and drums that are sometimes disrupted by mischievous monkeys looking for something to eat. The pilgrims gather in mass and their spiritual participation is really addictive.

It's Thaipusam Day. Shah Alam to Batu Caves, a return trip in one day using the KTM. Extremely huge crowd. I love seeing the kavadi. The weather is hot & dry, it was a whole lot of new experiences... I climbed the stairs and went into the caves. What I didn't do, and regret it, was eat the foods and talk to the local. Maybe next Thaipusam!

The cave itself is pretty immense but not all that impressive. What's more interesting is watching all the visitors. The giant Buddha is supposedly one of the tallest in Asia. There were lots of stalls set up selling food, clothes and other goods. Watch out for the monkeys or they might nab your stuff.

Conquer the 272 steps and watch monkeys as they terrorize tourists with food in their hands.

If you want to enjoy to the Max, pick a day is not so sunny or hot.
