Citadel and Corsican culture seduced me

Bastia, to the north of Corsica, is an amazing city. Full of charm, Bastia is a city with soul. The city is popular, as its inhabitants are mostly sailors and traders. The Citadel, is in the oldest district of the city. It can be found in 17th century homes, and old palaces which were sometimes feuding families. It is worth a stroll through the streets that cross the citadel. For the locals, it is the best way to discover the city. Around every street opens a great panorama of the coast and the port. Or you get to a charming little square, or a church .The Citadel is where they guard the riches, mixture of historical, popular life and Corsican culture.

I was seduced by this culture and the Citadel.

Bastia Citadel

Most of the cities in Corsica facing the sea, has a citadel that was once used to protect the local inhabitants from invaders. The citadel of Bastia is located next to the port. In order to access it you first have to walk through the lovely garden of Romieu, then up some steps that give access to a tunnel. Through the tunnel you cross the defensive walls and finally reach the heart of the citadel, which is a beautiful cobbled square. The main building of the square is the Governor's Palace, which has been closed to the public for years. The fort was established in 1530 and is very well preserved.

The buildings on the inside is very charming as they have been renovated and painted with ocher colors that closely resemble the Italian cities. There are also small houses with large balconies, full of flowers which creates an incredible romantic atmosphere. It is a real pleasure to walk through the streets. The Cathedral of St Marie is situated near the centre of the citadel. It is a fifteenth century building that has a huge facade painted white and yellow. The oddest thing about this Cathedral is that you have to pay 20 cents to have the silver sculpture of the Virgin Mary illuminated for a few minutes. What I liked most about the Citadel is the beautiful park full of vegetation at the top and which provide some beautiful walks where you can see hundreds of different flowers that makes this place even more beautiful.
