Bara Gumbad

Bara Gumbad, junto con su mezquita, es el monumento estrella de Lodi Gardens, un parque y zona arqueológica en el centro de Nueva Delhi. El complejo fue construido en el siglo XV por el primer Sultán de Delhi, Sikandar Lodhi, cuyo tumba también forma parte del parque. Se trata de un pequeño edificio con una gran cúpula cuyo decoración interior ha desaparecido desde ya hace muchos años pero que aún mantiene algunos adornos exteriores como las inscripciones árabes tallados por sus puertas. Al lado, hay una mezquita que está en un estado mucho mejor. Destaca por sus inscripciones coránicas, su mihrab altamente detallado, y su elegante serie de cúpulas y arcos. Lo curioso de la Bara Gumbad es que hoy en día nadie sabe exactamente porque fue construido, aunque hay teorías que era una puerta a la mezquita o quizás una tumba que nunca fue usado. Da igual su uso original, hoy en idea es un monumento interesante y digno de visitar, sobre todo si vas por la tarde cuando el parque cobra vida y se llena de grupos de amigos y estudiantes hindúes.

Bara Gumbad, along with its mosque is the monument star Lodi Gardens, a park and archaeological site in central New Delhi. The complex was built in the fifteenth century by the first Sultan of Delhi, Sikandar Lodhi, whose tomb is also part of the park. It is a small building with a large dome whose interior decoration has disappeared from many years ago but still maintains some exterior trim and Arabic inscriptions carved on its doors. Beside, there is a mosque that is in a much better state. Noted for its Koranic inscriptions, his mihrab highly detailed and elegant series of domes and arches. The curious thing about the Bara Gumbad is that today nobody knows exactly because it was built, although there are theories that it was a door to the mosque or perhaps a tomb that was never used. No matter its original use, now it is an interesting idea and worthy monument to visit, especially if you go in the afternoon when the park comes alive and full of groups of friends and Hindu students.
