On a train through Thailand
Most of the tourists in Thailand travel by bus as there are more private companies, with quality buses, extended hours and competitive prices. However I prefer the train which lets you get closer to the locals and is quite comfortable. Chumphon is the place where you get off if you plan to take the boat to Koh Tao, and if you go to Koh Pangan and Samui, Surat Thani is closer. The trip is about 8 hours, no night option, which lets you save a night of hotel in Bangkok, and arrives in time to catch the first boat to Koh Tao. The other option is the one that I took in the morning at 8 am, to see the scenery on the way and overnight ferry to Koh Tao, which also allows you to save a night in a hotel.
There are several hours of waiting in Chumphon but agencies sell you ferry ticket, which are next to the train station and let you leave your luggage and you get wi-fi. The journey , which costs about 12 €, includes a pretty frugal meal, but service is selling drinks and snacks during the trip, girls with the famous Thai smile and RENFE Reviewers wanted.
