1 review of Balvaird Castle

Traditional Castle of medieval nobility

Excellent

Balvaird Castle is one of the best surviving examples in Scotland today of a noble's castle from the late Middle Ages (ca. 1500 AD), called "Tower House" because its tower was more prominent than in other larger castles. This property belonged to the illustrious Murray family, in particular to Sir Andrew Murray of Tullibardine, awarded as part of his dowry. This family had a very important historical role, in fact the 2nd of William Wallace ("Braveheart") was called Andrew Murray and died at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Getting to the castle isn't easy as it's on a hill on a road from nowhere but admission is free.

You have to climb the hill, in the countryside, through fields of golden barley (for the manufacture of beer or whiskey) until you finally reached the castle. Its tower is the best preserved and is next to what was the main entrance, both have undergone structural reinforcement work, which are barely noticeable. Many take advantage of the visit for a day in the countryside along or within what were the castle walls. A visit is highly recommended if you're in the Perth area - Abernethy, to enjoy a good example of what castles were lower like in the High Middle Ages, with protection but more focused as housing noble families. Besides a beautiful view between trees, streams and nature.
