Parts of history
The bastion of San Carlos replaced the old castle of San Benito whose construction was destroyed during the attack by the pirate William Parker. In the year of 1676, it was inaugurated by the Governor Don Sandro Fernandez de Angulo, but its conclusion was until December 18th of the following year, occupying an area of 1549.21 meters. Because the bulwark was completed during the reign of Charles II, it was named in his honour. In the same way that the others are pentagonal bastions, it's currently the only bastion that you can access by a modified street-level ramp to the first level. The wooden doors open to the bottom basement with two rooms that functioned as prisons, from which countless stories of tunnels and secret passages have emerged.
