A beautiful area
Just beyond the port and beach of Elie, past the dunes and hills, you'll find Ruby Bay. This is a natural formation, sheltering any vessels which enter its waters. Interestingly, we found the existence of a "broch" (a primitive lighthouse: a circular tower that worked like a giant torch, lit with natural oils or with oils extracted from whales) facing north. But looking south, at the other end of this small bay, you can see a fairly modern lighthouse with twin towers, still in operation today. From the highest point of the bay, where there is a bench to sit and admire the beautiful view, you can see the contrast between nature, the historic and the modern.
Hikers can enjoy the full path that runs along the bay between the two lighthouses, which takes almost 4 km. It's a beautiful area that you're sure to enjoy.
