Spain's first Gothic cathedral

Excellent

The Cathedral of Ávila is the first Gothic cathedral built in Spain and quite a sight to behold. It's "gothic" both in atmosphere and architecture: the stones are old and dark and the domes are imposing, but the beauty of the Avila cathedral is found in the details. If you take a closer look, you'll find amazing sepulchers, evocative statues, and a variety of ornate chapels tucked into hidden corners...there's even a painting by the legendary painter El Greco.

It only costs two euros to enter and is simply wonderful. The medieval atmosphere and somber echo through the large vaulted hall are the essence of this incredible ancient walled city.

Gothic cathedral

The Cathedral of Ávila is considered the first in Spain with a Gothic style, but it dates back to an earlier era and is often considered gothic. Although it is not as spectacular as the cathedral of Leon or Toledo it is worth seeing as it also breathes the essence of the land of Avila: Sobriety forms, strength and simplicity. Of course you will have to pay an entry about two euros or go during religious times (in one weekend morning and one in the afternoon) if you want free access to the cathedral.
