Ubicada en la región de las altas montañas del estado de Veracruz se encuentra este municipio, entre vegetación, barrancas y el Cerro del Chiquigüite.
Su río, del mismo nombre, Atoyac, da lugar a cascadas, balenarios y riberas, todas inmersas en la selva; es tan fértil su tierra que se siembra en gran proporción caña de azúcar, café y palma. Es el lugar ideal para observar aves y mariposas.
Su geología da lugar a cavernas y grutas que se pueden visitar en un solo día o dedicarte hasta una semana en explorar el lugar.
Son famosos sus túneles, construidos con ingeniería del siglo XIX; hechos de piedra, dan paso al ferrocarril, medio de transporte importante en esta época por unir Veracruz con la ciudad de México.
Su viejo puente de piedra que fue construido por los españoles en el siglo XVII para cruzar el río, aún funciona, y es utilizado por los cañeros en su ruta hacia el ingenio.
En el centro de la ciudad hay un museo comunitario que presenta el pasado y el presente de Atoyac; exhibe también los restos fosilizados de un oso perezoso de 4 metros de altura llamado "El Gigante de Atoyac"
