Beautiful views, historic monument
What's fun to do with a day in Astoria? Head up the hill to this giant monument and climb up 164 steps of the dizzying spiral staircase to take in some amazing views of the area! The Astoria column was built in 1926 to celebrate the discovery, exploration, and settlement of the west. The magnificent concrete structure's design is based off of the Trajan Column in Rome. The column has a beautiful etched mural wrapped around it, depicting the history of the region. At the top (600 feet above sea level), you're rewarded with breathtaking 360 degree views of the Pacific Ocean, Young's bay, the Columbia River, and the coastal range.
