Aspe Valley

Aspe Valley is in the Parc National des Pyrénnées. The Gave (river) runs through Aspe, bringing life to the slopes. The villages of Urdos, Borce, Lescun, Sarrance Aydius are lovely. The idyllic valley of Aspe also has the old road to Santiago de Compostela used by pilgrims from Arles and Toulouse since the eleventh century, which crosses the Somport port. The French department of Pyrenees-Atlantiques has kept close historical and cultural ties with the Basque Country. In fact, the region comprises the territory of the French Basque country, which not only speaks Basque, but its architecture, cuisine and customs also reflect this.

Although there are also Basque influences in Béarn, the territory occupied by the West Valley is culturally rooted in ancient Gascony. Hence, the inhabitants speak a subdialect of Occitan and the region, steeped in a rural flavor, has its own strong identity. The Aspe Valley leads to one of its major cities: Oloron-Sainte-Marie.
