Triumphal arch
A large triumphal arch built around 132 BC. The people of the city built it north of the Olympian, the site of the temple of Zeus, in honor of the Emperor Hadrian, who had done many works for the city. It was built on the road leading from the city to the shrine of Illissio, marking the boundary between the old and new city. The monument, which measures 18 meters high and 13.5 wide, has two fronts, with the same sculpture, and is also divided in two different parts. The lower part recalls the Roman arches, while the top is typical of a Greek arch. There were two phrases on the bow, on the west
Side "This is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus" and the other "this is the city of Hadrian and not of Theseus"! In 1778 the arch was built within the walls Turkish Haseki Wall, and has become one of the gateways into the city, the Kamaroporta.
