An entire ornamental bastion

Near the beautiful neighborhood of El Borne and the Ciudadela park, there is a lovely monument giving the area a historical touch: the Arc de Triomf of Barcelona (Triumphal Arch).

A structure built in the framework of the Universal Exposition of 1888, work of the architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas. An entire ornamental bastion you can see from far away, although it is better to come closer to take a few good pictures.

It has reminiscences of the brick architecture of Arab origin. Apart from symbolizing the respect of the city towards the participating nations during the exhibition, this arch proudly displays the coat of arms of the city and refers to the forty-nine Spanish provinces.

Strong symbolism

To me, the most appealing aspect of the Arch is its symbolism. It wasn't built to recall an act of war, like most arches, but as a welcome gate, to welcome all those who came to visit the Universal Exposition of 1888 in Barcelona.

It's made of a brick structure and it is of neo-Mudejar style. One can see representations of industry, commerce, and handicraft in the upper part of the arch. It is approximately 30 meters high and features the coat of arms of all Spanish provences.

It was reformed in 1989, and is in very good condition. It is located on a very wide avenue between the Paseo San Juan and Paseo Lluis Companys.

Next to the Ciudadela

Many cities have their Triumphal Arch, gate or bridge... And this is Barcelona's, located next to the Ciudadela park. It has a perfect street for skating, walking, riding a bike, etc. An area of Barcelona slightly distant from the center but it is worth visiting.

Excellent

As I live in Paris, I'm not amazed by the Arc de Triomf of Barcelona compared to the Arc de Triomphe of Paris, but it has it own beauty especially in the sunrise and sunset, it is great to walk or to be on bike.

Nice to visit!
