1 review of Arc de Sant Ramon del Call Street

The Jewish Mezuzah

Excellent

In l'Arc de Sant Ramón del Call Street, there is the building of the Historical Museum of Barcelona, right in the center of the Jewish and Gothic quarter of Barcelona. The building has, in one of the wings, an entrance hall that is not currently open, preserving a hole in the stone on the right side, which is believed to be the old place of a Jewish Mezuzah.

The Mezuzah are scrolls with Torah verses places in a steal or wood container, hanged on the right side of entrance halls in Jewish houses. They are placed to be seen by everyone and represent one of the most distinctive characteristics in Jewish houses. Actually, they are used so that one can make the difference between Jewish and non-Jewish houses.

Nowadays, we believe the hole one sees could be a mezuzah because the building was erected in the Roman period (actually we can the excavations at the level of the Roman ground inside) and then built during the Jewish period.

The building still preserves, apart from the mezuzah, the inscription of a stone plaque and another entrance hall, now bricked up, which used to give way to the building that was supposedly the old Synagogue. The building, like many others in the neighborhood, was remodeled afterwards, hiding the Roman and Jewish legacy at first sight.

If you are visiting the Jewish quarter, go there, not only to get information in the museum or sign up for a tour, but also to observe the building and find the Jewish remains. What I like the most is the mezuzah. And touch the hole with my fingers thinking that this hall used to give way to a Jewish house back in the days.
