1 review of An Caisteal

Pure beauty

An Caisteal is a peak that stands 995 meters above sea level, making it a munro according to the Scottish classification system. It is located near Crianlarich, in the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs natural park. Climbing it isn't straightforward; the rocky terrain makes an ascent quite complicated, and the easiest way to get up is first to climb the adjacent peak of Beinn a' Chroin.

It will take about 6 hours to get to the top and back down again, so in winter you'll have to plan carefully to ensure that you have enough daylight. And between December and March safety measures are compulsory: you'll need crampons, climbing shoes and an ice axes.

But whatever time of year you choose to climb, you'll find beautiful views at the top. Apparently the name comes from the word meaning castle or fortress, as this mountain once provided protection for nearby villages and settlements.
