Madrid’s most classic hamburger

Excellent

Alfredo’s Barbacoa is probably the most classic hamburger restaurant in Madrid. It opened its doors to the public in 1981, when there was no boom surrounding the hamburger like the one we have today. Because of that, it won the “best hamburger in Madrid” award for many years.

I don’t think that claim to fame is 100 percent true anymore. Although they use good quality pork, homemade barbecue sauce, and homemade coleslaw salad (which is spectacular), the hamburger itself is lacking something. The place deserves to be visited although it might only be for its Texas-style decoration (although Alfredo is from New York, himself).


The offer is limited in variety. The burgers come in two sizes, 160 grams and 250 grams but, compared with other hamburgers of the same size, Alfredo’s seems smaller. They respect your order and how you want the burger cooked. If you ask for it medium-well, medium, or rare, it will come that way. When you ask for cheese, they give you just one slice and it gets lost within the burger.

The bun, which has always been an important part of a burger for me, is deceptive because it’s regular Bimbo bread, and sometimes it comes toasted (which gives it more consistency) and other times it comes almost right out of the bag.

As a matter of fact, one of the main problems with Alfredo’s is that it is always so full of people that the service comes off a bit cold. The service isn’t always consistent…depends somewhat on the luck of the day. The menu has other dishes, like the typical starters and desserts you’d expect from an American burger joint.

I think that a visit to Alfredo’s is pretty much obligatory for any burger lover if you want to see the origin of quality hamburgers in Madrid, although it’s been resting on its laurels for quite some time. But hey, if it’s constantly filled with people, why should they change? Now that there are new hamburger joints popping up throughout the city and making waves, I believe Alfredo’s has already been knocked out of first place
