Monuments and legends
Located 22 km from Salamanca on the motorway from Avila to Madrid, it belonged in the fifteenth century to the Dukes of Alba. It is embedded on a fertile plain with the Tormes at its feet. It still preserves notable monuments, but is now only a pale reflection of what it once was.
It maintains the remains of the fortress palace of the dukes, destroyed by the French in the War of Independence. The Church of San Juan founded in the 12th century, that of San Miguel, with a lateral nave from the thirteenth century, the Church of San Pedro, that of Santiago, with an elegant Mudejar coffered ceiling. The Plaza Mayor is a beautiful example of a Castilian arcaded square.
